Cuando Windows 7 llegó a nuestros ordenadores, fue un soplo de aire fresco que mejoraba al tan criticado Windows Vista, su predecesor, en prácticamente todo. Y es que actualizar a Windows 7 suponía mejorar el rendimiento, la estabilidad y tener una interfaz mejorada. Sin embargo, Microsoft finalizó su soporte en 2020, manteniendo únicamente el soporte para las empresas (pagando). Esto podría mantenerse en el tiempo, ya que se han descubierto actualizaciones que garantizan una ampliación del soporte para Windows 7 hasta 2026.
Cuando Windows Vista llegó, los usuarios de XP se mostraron dudosos a la hora de decidir actualizarse. Y es que con Windows XP se tenían años de parches y actualizaciones a sus espaldas, lo que significaba que todo funcionaba ya a la perfección. Con Windows 7 pasó lo contrario, y los que tenían Vista, vieron una mejora de la experiencia al cambiarse al sistema más moderno. A pesar de que Windows 7 lleva desde 2009 en el mercado, este sigue recibiendo soporte por parte de Microsoft, aunque en un sector concreto que no lo abandona debido a su popularidad.

Para el consumidor medio que compra portátiles u ordenadores de escritorio, actualizar al sistema operativo más nuevo suele ser siempre la opción elegir. Esto siempre que se cumplan los requisitos, ya que mucha gente piensa que lo nuevo es siempre mejor. En muchos casos eso se cumple, pudiendo obtener un mayor rendimiento, fluidez y nuevas características cuando actualizas tanto las aplicaciones como programas junto a un nuevo sistema operativo.
No obstante, para las empresas u organizaciones es todo lo contrario, se evita actualizar siempre que no sea completamente necesario. Aquí el pensamiento general es más bien que si algo funciona mejor no tocarlo. También hay que tener en cuenta que el software que tienen puede que solo sea compatible con Windows 7 y requieran de un soporte continuo para funcionar. O puede ser el caso de ordenadores antiguos, de oficina y similares que no pueden o no funcionan bien bajo el último Windows 11 y por ello siguen en la versión 7.
Sea el caso que sea, para todos aquellos que decidieron quedarse en Windows 7, Microsoft les ofreció 3 años más de soporte extendido cuando este se acabó en 2020. Por tanto, finalizó solo para los clientes domésticos y consumidores normales, ya que las empresas reciben actualizaciones hasta en principio 2023. Sin embargo, unas actualizaciones han revelado que este soporte se ampliará por 3 años, recibiendo así actualizaciones de seguridad extendidas hasta 2026.
Las actualizaciones de seguridad de julio amplían el soporte hasta enero de 2026
El medio alemán Deskmodder, ha descubierto que las actualizaciones de seguridad KB5015861 y KB5015862 de julio incluyen unas licencias y claves ESU (actualizaciones de seguridad extendidas). En estas se garantiza el soporte de Windows 7 hasta enero de 2026. Además, las actualizaciones llegarían a estas versiones del sistema operativo:
- Windows 7 SP1 Enterprise
- Windows 7 SP1 Pro
- Windows Server 2008 R2
- Windows Embedded Standard 7
- Windows Embedded POS Ready 7
Estas fueron publicadas como parte del “Patch Day” de julio de 2022 y solo se pueden instalar en ordenadores con licencia. No obstante, es posible romper esta restricción e instalar dichas actualizaciones en Windows 7 Home y Windows 7 Profesional. Dicho esto, la cuota de mercado de Windows 7 sigue siendo muy alta, teniendo en cuenta que lleva más de una década con nosotros.
Según Statcounter, una empresa de terceros que realiza estadísticas de este tipo, anuncia que Windows 7 tiene una cuota de mercado del 11,54% y Windows 11 un 10,96%. Esto difiere enormemente con los datos de Steam, donde se veía un 0,16% para Windows 7 y un 21,23% para Windows 11. Aunque estamos hablando de comparar unas cifras que incluyen el ámbito empresarial y una plataforma que es exclusiva de videojuegos.
En todo caso, si se incrementa el soporte hasta 2026, podríamos decir que Windows 7 ha tenido más años de soporte que Windows 8.1 o incluso Windows 10. De este último, dada su popularidad, se espera que reciba una extensión de soporte por parte de Microsoft en un futuro.
