En un anuncio de prensa en la Casa Blanca hoy, el CEO de TSMC, C.C. Wei, se paró junto al presidente Donald Trump para anunciar que TSMC invertirá 100 mil millones de dólares en Estados Unidos. Las nuevas operaciones se centrarán principalmente en Arizona.
“Los chips de IA más potentes del mundo se fabricarán aquí mismo en Estados Unidos”, dijo Trump. Esta nueva inversión se suma a los 65 mil millones de dólares que la empresa ya ha destinado a sus fábricas actuales, las cuales ya están produciendo chips de 4 nm.
Trump explicó que la inversión se destinará a la construcción de tres fábricas, dos instalaciones de empaquetado y un centro de investigación y desarrollo. Además, afirmó que estas instalaciones en Arizona generarán más de 20,000 empleos directos e indirectos. Por su parte, el comunicado de prensa de TSMC señala que la inversión “respaldará 40,000 empleos en la construcción durante los próximos cuatro años y creará decenas de miles de trabajos bien remunerados en manufactura avanzada de chips y en I+D”.
No se mencionó en qué nodos fabricará chips TSMC ni cuál será su capacidad de producción. Sin embargo, se mencionó a Apple, AMD, Nvidia y Qualcomm como posibles clientes.
Trump destacó la importancia de fabricar chips avanzados dentro de Estados Unidos por razones económicas y de seguridad nacional.
Si bien la Ley CHIPS y de Ciencia impulsó la expansión de TSMC en EE.UU. durante la administración de Biden, el secretario de Comercio, Howard Lutnick, afirmó que fueron los aranceles de Trump los que llevaron a la empresa a mudarse al país.
Esta decisión permitirá a TSMC diversificar su producción fuera de Taiwán, un país que con frecuencia enfrenta desastres naturales como terremotos y tifones. Además, las tensiones geopolíticas con China hacen que la expansión a EE.UU. sea aún más estratégica. Las nuevas fábricas también acercarán a TSMC a sus clientes, y es probable que su capacidad de producción ya esté reservada por las empresas mencionadas por Wei.
No todos recibirán bien esta noticia. Intel, que enfrenta serios problemas financieros desde la segunda mitad de 2024, ahora tendrá a un fuerte competidor fabricando chips en EE.UU. con planes de inversión adicionales.
