Panos Panay, vicepresidente ejecutivo y jefe de producto de Microsoft, comentó en 2021 que Windows 11 era el primer capítulo de una nueva era en el universo Windows, y hace relativamente poco pudimos descubrir que Windows 12 era un proyecto real, y que ya lleva un tiempo en desarrollo.
La verdad es que en aquel momento no pudimos dar el contexto adecuado a las palabras de Panos Panay, es decir, no terminamos de entender a qué se refería realmente, algo que hoy ha cambiado por completo gracias a las declaraciones que el ejecutivo realizó en referencia al motor dedicado de IA (inteligencia artificial) que montan los Ryzen 7040. Según Panos Panay:
«La IA es la tecnología que define nuestro tiempo, no se parece a nada que haya visto antes. Está transformando las industrias, está mejorando nuestra vida diaria de muchas maneras, algunas de ellas se ven, otras no se ven, y estamos ahora mismo en un punto de inflexión. Aquí es donde la computación desde la nube hasta el borde se vuelve cada vez más inteligente, más personal, y todo se logra aprovechando el poder de la IA […] Ahora que AMD también está apostando con esta tecnología, con los Ryzen 7040, es el próximo paso en este viaje juntos«.
El ejecutivo también dijo que la inteligencia artificial va a reinventar la manera en la que hacemos todas las cosas con Windows, unas declaraciones que apuntan claramente a un Windows 12 potenciado por la inteligencia artificial. Sé que puede que alguno de nuestros lectores haya levantado una ceja, pero la verdad es que esto tiene todo el sentido del mundo. La inteligencia artificial lleva un tiempo presente en nuestros smartphones, y Microsoft ha sido una de las compañías que más recursos ha invertido en esta tecnología, aunque es cierto que hasta ahora ha centrado sus esfuerzos en desplegarla dentro del sector profesional. AMD está utilizando motores Xilinx dedicados a la aceleración de inteligencia artificial en sus APUs, Intel también ha hecho movimientos importantes en este sentido con sus VPUs, y tanto las tarjetas gráficas GeForce RTX 20 y superiores como las Radeon RX 7000 cuentan con núcleos dedicados a la aceleración de IA.
El hardware está ahí, y las posibilidades que ofrece la inteligencia artificial son tan interesantes que su adopción a gran escala en Windows 12 sería alto perfectamente comprensible, y una buena noticia, ya que abriría las puertas a nuevas experiencias y podría ser clave para crear un sistema operativo de nueva generación totalmente revolucionario.
