Volcano Energy y Luxor Technology pusieron en funcionamiento el primer pool de minería de Bitcoin en El Salvador. Buscará aprovechar la energía geotérmica, proveniente de los volcanes del país centroamericano.
En el comunicado oficial, al que pudo acceder CriptoNoticias, se detalla que la empresa de capital público-privado Volcano Energy «solo minará Bitcoin a través de Lava Pool». Cabe destacar que el 23% de las ganancias que genera Volcano Energy corresponden al Gobierno de El Salvador, una de las partes fundadoras de la compañía.
El rol de Luxor Technology en Lava Pool es el de aportar «un servicio sin fricciones y confiable, dada la trayectoria de la compañía en servicios y software para minería de Bitcoin».
De esta manera, El Salvador cumple con lo que había anunciado en julio de 2023, cuando se dio a conocer el proyecto de su propio pool de minería de Bitcoin. Como se explicó en CriptoNoticias en aquel momento, Lava Pool complementará la construcción de una granja de minería de Bitcoin que se está construyendo en Metapan, la cual demandó una inversión de USD 1.000 millones y funcionará con energía solar y eólica.
Esta granja proveerá de 1,3 EH/s (hexahashes por segundo) de hashrate a la red de Bitcoin y tendrá una potencia final de 241MW (megawatts) cuando esté concluida.
El comunicado de Volcano Energy y Luxor detalla que «en países con abundantes fuentes de energía renovable, como El Salvador, los mineros de Bitcoin pueden mejorar la economía de nuevos proyectos energéticos al ofrecerse como un comprador flexible de primera y última instancia». «Los mineros generan ingresos inmediatos para nuevos proyectos energéticos, especialmente en áreas remotas del país, y también proporcionan una carga flexible que puede apagarse instantáneamente para respaldar la red durante momentos de tensión», agregan.
Según ese mismo documento, El Salvador planea reinvertir las ganancias de la minería en la infraestructura de transmisión y distribución de energía en su país.
El Salvador avanza en su adopción de Bitcoin
Tal y como se detalla en la Criptopedia, sección educativa de CriptoNoticias, un pool de minería de Bitcoin reúne a un conjunto de mineros que combinan sus recursos para aumentar sus posibilidades de minar con éxito un bloque en la red de Bitcoin y recibir así la recompensa correspondiente. En lugar de competir individualmente entre ellos, los mineros en un pool trabajan juntos para encontrar los hashes que demanda la minería de Bitcoin, y luego distribuyen las recompensas proporcionalmente según la potencia de hash que cada uno aporta.
Lava Pool es el primer pool de este estilo en El Salvador. Con respecto al proyecto en particular, Gerson Martínez, CSO (director de Seguridad) de Volcano Energy, aseguró que «Lava Pool es otro ejemplo de la ventaja del primer movimiento de El Salvador como estado-nación en el ecosistema de Bitcoin». «Nuestra visión es crear una empresa de energía y minería de Bitcoin integrada verticalmente, cuyo valor sea acumulativo para los inversores y todos los ciudadanos salvadoreños», añadió.
Por su parte, Ethan Vera, COO (director de operaciones) de Luxor, comentó que «el ethos de la minería de Bitcoin gira en torno a la descentralización geográfica, y el desarrollo de la infraestructura de pools mineros en El Salvador contribuirá a este objetivo».
