Las milagrosas Raspberry Pi de 35 dólares se han convertido en un objeto de deseo. Han triplicado su precio y hacerse con uno de los nuevos modelos a los precios oficiales es prácticamente misión imposible. Y cuando ocurre esto, la gente busca alternativas.
MiniPCs empresariales. Multitud de empresas y comercios hacen uso de pequeños PCs para puestos de trabajo modestos en los que la poder trabajar en el ámbito ofimático, poder usar el correo y una navegación ligera eran los requisitos. Los fabricantes lo saben, y desde hace mucho ofrecen equipos de reducidas dimensiones, miniPCs que tienen prestaciones limitadas pero que cumplen y además lo hacen a precios competitivos porque para esos puestos no es necesario tirar la casa por la ventana.
Adiós, Raspberry Pi, hola, ThinkCentre. Esa realidad es la que detectó Andreas Spiess, un youtuber que quiso comprobar si esos miniPCs empresariales podían ser una alternativa válida a las Raspberry Pi. En su vídeo mostró cómo equipos de las familias Fujitsu Futro o Lenovo ThinkCentre pueden acabar siendo una opción de lo más interesante para los amantes de este tipo de informática.
Mercado de segunda mano. Lo mejor de todo es que es posible encontrar equipos de este tipo en sitios como eBay o en Wallapop. Nosotros nos hemos dado una vuelta y hemos visto ejemplos como este ThinkCentre M72E (i5, 8 GB de RAM, 500 GB de disco) por 85 euros o este ThinkCentre M910q (i5, 16 GB de RAM, 256 GB de disco) por unos 100. Como señalan en Ars Technica hay muchos disponibles, y aunque hay que mirar bien, la oferta está ahí.
Pero no es una Raspberry Pi. El enfoque de estos equipos es ligeramente distinto y no son tan adecuados para proyectos de electrónica, pero sí lo son si lo que queremos es montar un pequeño servidor como muchos hacen con las Raspberry Pi. Aprovecharlos para montar un centro multimedia con Kodi o una pequeña máquina de retrogaming es buena idea, pero también usarlos para instalar Pi-Hole o montarnos un pequeño NAS y una nube privada doméstica en la que almacenar documentos o guardar nuestras fotos.
¿Y el consumo, qué? Una de las ventajas de la Raspberry Pi es su eficiencia, y ciertamente aquí estamos en desventaja, aunque no tanta como podría parecer. Todo depende desde luego de la configuración del miniPC elegido, pero por lo general son equipos modestos tanto en potencia como en consumo. Según Spiesss, dos RPi consumen unos 12 W en modo de bajo rendimiento, mientras que un miniPC con un i5 ronda los 16-18 W (y hasta 25 W durante periodos de alta actividad). Hay equipos más modernos y eficientes, pero no compensan: lo que ahorras en consumo no sale a cuenta porque esas opciones salen mucho más caras.
Al final no son tan caros. Como decía Spiess, un servidor doméstico completo basado en una Raspberry Pi puede salir por unos 150 dólares si incluimos periféricos y componentes como las unidades de almacenamiento, así que estos viejos miniPCs comerciales en formato USFF (Ultra Small Form Factor) son una opción muy interesante porque incluyen procesador, memoria y almacenamiento, además de puertos suficienes para aprovecharlos rápidamente para nuestro propósito.
Software, otra ventaja. Además, tener un chip x86 (y no uno ARM) es interesante para poder usar Windows si lo necesitamos. Aún así, Spiess usaba Proxmox —la versión gratuita y Open Source— sobre Debian para usar dos máquinas virtuales: una para instalar Home Assistant y otra con un contenedor en Docker para la pila IOT y luego aplicaciones domóticas, pero las opciones aquí son virtualmente ilimitadas. Su conclusión era clara: estos miniPCs cumplen con nota, y aunque no tengan el “encanto” de las Raspberry Pi pueden ser una estupenda elección para quienes busquen montarse sus pequeños servidores domésticos. O quizás no tan pequeños.
